Choosing Wisely: Right Time, Right Test, Right Patient, Right Cost

Choosing Wisely:
Right Time, Right Test, Right Patient, Right Cost

ASCP Joins the Choosing Wisely Campaign

The Choosing Wisely campaign dovetails perfectly with ASCP’s efforts to engage pathologists, residents, and laboratory professionals in becoming more patient focused. ASCP joined this campaign in April 2012 and announced its five tests for appropriate utilization on Feb. 21, 2013. While ASCP continues to build support within medical laboratories nationwide to implement their recommendation for appropriate test utilization, it also received a $50,000 grant through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) to develop Choosing Wisely courses, a toolkit, and promotions for physicians and patients in California. The resources developed for this state will be applied to other states after 2014.

Additionally, the Society continues to work closely with the ABIM Foundation and its highly orchestrated Choosing Wisely campaign with 37 other medical societies, to address the needs of patients through better access to and use of medical laboratory tests.

Turning Market Inefficiencies Around

Quest Diagnostics is one of the labs that is taking the five tests that ASCP has identified under the Choosing Wisely campaign under active consideration. In answering why healthcare reform is part of the labs’ responsibility, Quest’s Chief Laboratory Officer Dr. Stephen C. Suffin says, “We have to turn the market inefficiencies around without harming health care in the United States. As a society, we need to be outraged by the waste in health care and actively get involved in change and creating the political will to change. Think of what we could do if we invested 10 percent of GDP elsewhere.
